Europese jazz: Hieronder valt de gypsy jazz of gitane jazz die halverwege de jaren ’30 groot werd door Django Reinhart. In Nederland zijn het Rosenberg Trio en het Trio Robin Nolan meesters op dit terrein. Ook Toots Thielemans ontwikkelde een authentiek Europees jazzconcept door het logisch gebruik van de oorspronkelijk Europese driekwartsmaat (de wals, o.a. Bluesette) tot een nieuwe vorm van Europese jazz. Als een van de weinige Europese jazzmusici heeft Joe Vanenkhuizen dit concept toegepast door consequent al zijn muziek in deze maatsoort te componeren. Ook Pierre Courbois mag in dit verband niet onvermeld blijven, hij is een expert op het gebied van Europese maatsoorten
